Q&A with Dr. Emel Midyat

How did you get into pediatrics?
From the moment I learned to read and write at age 6, I recall pretending to write prescriptions for my great-grandfather, who had undergone an amputation. I believed the right medication could help him grow a new leg. Since that early moment, I knew I wanted to become a doctor. It was during medical school that I discovered my passion for pediatrics, finding immense fulfillment in working with children.

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Istanbul, Turkey, and since 2017, I have been living in the USA. I have lived in New York, Boston, Pittsburgh, and now reside in Hoboken.

What do you enjoy most about working in your neighborhood office?
I am drawn to people and diversity, and nothing brings me more joy than seeing my patients grow healthy and vibrant, playing at the playgrounds around the neighborhood.

What keeps you motivated?
My family and my job! Celebrating milestones, providing comfort during illness and knowing that being a source of support can create lasting bonds.

What do you do for fun?
I find great joy in spending time outdoors with my 4-year-old son, exploring nature and enjoying the fresh air. Additionally, I love experimenting with baking and exploring new cuisines in the kitchen.
