Q&A with Dr. Gabrielle Espiritu
How did you get into pediatrics?
I’ve always had a love for education. Since I was 7 or 8 years old, I would pretend to be my younger brother’s teacher–I’d teach lessons to him using our small whiteboard at home and even make him take tests that I typed and printed out! For many years, I thought I would become a teacher. Later on, as I fostered another passion for critical thinking and problem-solving, I thought maybe I’d become an investigative journalist. I wasn’t sure how to decide on just one career path; I had so many interests! Once I started college, I realized that there was a perfect option that would integrate all of my passions: Pediatrics!
Where did you grow up?
Houma, Louisiana.
Where do you live?
Prospect Heights, Brooklyn.
What do you enjoy most about working in your neighborhood office?
As a primary care provider, I love getting to know families and watching children grow! Learning from and collaborating with my colleagues and coworkers truly makes work enjoyable, as well!
What keeps you motivated?
I am motivated by the ability to help my patients and their families as their pediatrician. Whether it’s making a patient laugh and smile when they were previously nervous about doctor appointments, answering burning questions that parents might have, or diagnosing and managing a more complicated medical issue…I feel so privileged to be able to provide care for my patients in both big and small ways!
What do you do for fun?
I love trying new brunch restaurants, going to concerts and Broadway shows, singing karaoke, and spending time with my husband, our dog Yoshi, and friends. I also love baking all kinds of desserts and will usually multitask by FaceTiming with my parents back in Louisiana while trying a new recipe!
